Research interest My general research interests are in the evolutionary origins of animal and human cognition. My doctoral research involves studying the cognition behind the exceptional tool use of New Caledonian crows (Corvus moneduloides). The crows, based only on Grande Terre and Mare in New Caledonia, use complex manufacturing processes to make a variety of leaf, stick and twig tools. By studying the crows' reactions to novel problems I hope to identify the cognitive processes that have led to their unique behaviour. I joined the team in Auckland on a 3-year Commonwealth Doctoral Scholarhsip, following an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at Oxford University. Apart from work I enjoy the fascinating jungles here in New Caledonia, spear fishing, and good books.
